Did you know that the health of your pond fish is impacted by the water's temperature? I guess I mistakenly believed that since pond fish have cold blood, they can endure nearly any temperature. This is somewhat accurate, but the truth is that temperature has a significant impact on your fish's health. Depending on the season, there are a few things you can do to ensure your fish are as healthy as possible.
Spring: Your fish may experience extreme stress due to the temperature changes. (particularly those who spent the winter in your pond!) There are two methods to reduce stress. Turn off your fountain or waterfalls before a cold snap to reduce how quickly your pond water cools. Pond salt can be used to help your fish produce a robust slime coat. This aids the fish's natural defences against parasites and bacterial illnesses.
Summer: The ideal temperature for pond water is between 68 and 74 degrees Fahrenheit. When the temperature rises above 85 degrees, water begins to lose a lot of its capacity to contain oxygen. Breathing won't be possible for your fish. Aerators, fountains, and waterfalls can then assist in oxygenating the water. (More oxygen also slows the growth of algae.)
Winter: As the water cools, your fish's metabolism decreases. When the temperature stays below 39 degrees Fahrenheit, they don't need to eat. If the water is above 39 degrees, it is advised to eat something simple to digest. Keep a portion of your pond open if you live in a location where the water freezes so that the poisonous fumes can escape. Avoid breaking the ice to maintain an open hole since the shock waves will harm your fish.
