Fish excrete ammonia (NH3) into the water, and it is also released when solid waste and uneaten food break down.
Although ammonia is extremely poisonous to fish, the bacteria that inhabit the filter normally remove it from the water.


Testing the water with an ammonia test kit is the only technique to determine the ammonia level.
Regular testing will stop harm from ammonia poisoning, especially in new ponds.
